A Little About Us (click here to see our shop)

My name is Scott Tanguay. I've loved knives of all kinds since I was a young boy. I made my first knife back in 1982 while in Machine Technology class. I started Tanguay Custom Knives with the sole intent of putting quality, reliable, and affordable knives in the hands of the working men and women who need them.

I have been an avid outdoorsman since my youth. I hunt, fish, canoe, kayak, camp, and hike. I also spent 6 years in the U.S. Navy, and did two deployments to the Middle East. The first tour was during the Tanker Wars in the late 80's. This included Operations Praying Mantis and Earnest Will. I returned to the Persian Gulf and Red Sea to serve with the Maritime Interception Force during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. This experience has taught me the value of ALWAYS carrying a good knife. You just never know when you're going to need one.

My knives are made to be used. I test each model extensively for its intended purpose. A knife is a tool, and I believe in getting the best tool you can afford so it won't let you down when you need it most. I am a hands on kind of guy, and I know tools. I have worked around heavy equipment and machinery all my life. I have been a sailor, machinist, welder, millwright, electrical/instruments and controls technician, electrical power and steam engineer, and now a cogeneration electrical power plant supervisor.

I use the best materials in making my knives. I prefer to use O-1 high carbon tool steel for my blades. I find O-1 blades are the most versatile, toughest, take and hold the best edge, and are the easiest to resharpen in the field. I also prefer Micarta, G-10, and Corian for my handles, but use a variety of wood, antler and other materials as well. On occasion I also use another high carbon steel, stainless steel, or damascus steel.

I make sheaths out of Kydex or 8-9 oz vegtable tanned leather. For larger knives, I also offer a Combat Master Sheath from Spec-Ops Brand.
